Enable Buffalo LinkStation 421e SFTP

Kind of as an update to my  Gain SSH access to the Buffalo LinkStation 421e  article, I realized SFTP support wasn't setup correctly. In order to do this, I had to: SSH into the LinkStation. If you haven't enabled SSH access,  here's how . vi /etc/sshd_config On the line that starts with Subsystem, replace /usr/local/libexec/sftp-server with /usr/lib/sftp-server. Save and quit vi. Run: /etc/init.d/sshd.sh restart That's it.

Enable Samba Guest access on Buffalo LinkStation 421e

I tried to connect as a guest to a Samba Windows Shared folder I setup on the LinkStation and it didn't seem to let me connect. It turns out from what I can see that the 'nobody' account is what is setup with Samba, but can't seem to access the shares (even though the permissions on the folders are correct). So here's the steps I took to enable guest access: SSH into the LinkStation. If you haven't enabled SSH access, here's how . vi /etc/samba/smbusers Replace the word 'nobody' with 'guest', so your file looks something like this:                 root = administrator                 guest = guest pcguest smbguest Save and quit vi. Run: /etc/init.d/smb.sh restart That's it. The any Samba guest now actually uses the 'guest' account.

Gain SSH access to the Buffalo LinkStation 421e

So it turns out after I setup my LinkStation it seems guest access to Samba and AFP doesn't seem to work. The only way for me to solve this is to get sshd turned on. It just so happens that there is a tool called acp_commander that allows to send shell commands to the LinkStation (originally for firmware purposes I'm sure). Besides being a huge security hole, it serves its purpose. Things to note: I am using 1.31-0.92 firmware telnets does not exist on this firmware version, so we can't use that for access. I could unzip the firmware (the zip password exists online) and repackage the firmware, but I just didn't want to go through that process. The commands I'm explaining are for the GUI version of ACPCommander, not the command line java version. Strings would have to be escaped differently for the command line. Steps: Obtain the UI version of ACP Commander from here . The administrator password in the GUI should be the 'admin' password you hav...

Buffalo LinkStation 421e Out-of-the-box Issues

I just purchased a Buffalo LinkStation 421e from MicroCenter . It was on sale for $99 an I purchased 2 3TB WD Red hard drives for $119 each. I installed the drives and booted up the NAS. After trying to install LinkStation, I kept getting the error "could not configure ip address" and "no unused ip address available". I would not be able to see the LinkStation at all (including with NAS Navigator) until I rebooted the LinkStation. NAS Navigator indicated the device is in "Emergency Mode" and the firmware needs to be updated. So, I downloaded the Firmware Update app for the mac. Initially, the updater does not work because it mentions it cannot find a partition. I fixed this by copying the "update.app" and "data" folder items to my hard drive. I opened LSUpdater.ini in the data folder with a text editor. Changing the line that says "NoFormatting = 0" to "NoFormatting = 1" and relaunching the firmware update.app di...
