Enable Samba Guest access on Buffalo LinkStation 421e

I tried to connect as a guest to a Samba Windows Shared folder I setup on the LinkStation and it didn't seem to let me connect. It turns out from what I can see that the 'nobody' account is what is setup with Samba, but can't seem to access the shares (even though the permissions on the folders are correct).

So here's the steps I took to enable guest access:

  • SSH into the LinkStation. If you haven't enabled SSH access, here's how.
  • vi /etc/samba/smbusers
  • Replace the word 'nobody' with 'guest', so your file looks something like this:
               root = administrator
               guest = guest pcguest smbguest
  • Save and quit vi.
  • Run: /etc/init.d/smb.sh restart
  • That's it. The any Samba guest now actually uses the 'guest' account.
